Application of sandwich panels

Sandwich panels are used in various industries as wall and roof structure finishing elements in building structures such as:

  • industrial halls, production halls, warehouses
  • Commercial facilities (stores, supermarkets)
  • livestock facilities (barns, piggeries, poultry houses)
  • agricultural halls (filling halls, halls for agricultural crops)
  • sports arenas
  • catering facilities, refrigeration, freezers for food storage
  • temporary facilities constituting the back-up of the construction site
  • automotive workshops, car washes, craftsmen’s workshops
  • small industrial workshops
  • Office facilities, residential facilities.

The most commonly used are sandwich panels as materials for roofing, external and internal walls, curtain walls, partition walls, or ceilings in cooling chambers and as elements of building insulation, including our HalMod steel halls.

Installation and joining of sandwich panels

Installation of wall sandwich panels and installation of roof sandwich panels to the steel structure of the hall is a simple process and allows the structure to be encased quickly. When properly sealed bonding of sandwich panelsh eliminates the presence of thermal bridges, which positively affects the energy-saving parameters of the building. Joining of sandwich panels must be very tight, the panels must be connected to each other with special factory locks or sealed with appropriate foam.

Price of sandwich panels installation is lower than the labor price of thermal insulation alone on traditional walls. The cost of the sandwich panel is comparable to the materials for such thermal insulation, and after installation you get a finished wall.

Sandwich panels - technology

Sandwich panels are manufactured from coated steel sheet. The production process of the plates begins with a phase hot-dip galvanizingfollowed by a phase double-sided varnishing. The sheets are then coated with coatings with different chemical compositions.

The primary coatings used to coat sandwich panels are polyesters, or polyurethane paints. This ensures that the surface steel sheet resistant to chemicals and biological agents, allows you to maintain the aesthetics of the wall surface, which can be washed with a pressure washer. Finally, the surface of the plate is protected protective film. The key element of sandwich panels is core, i.e. filling – is the factor that determines the properties of a particular type of board.

Filling of sandwich panels

The filling of the multilayer board is a core made of one of three basic types of material:

  • polystyrene boards – An economical and lightweight solution, but having the least durability. Styrofoam panels are mainly used in agriculture for maximum economy. But they can only be used in light colors because they get ruined in the summer.
  • polyurethane boards – PUR/PIR polyurethane foam – very good thermal insulation AND the most popular solution on the market
  • mineral wool boards – Very high fire resistance And thanks to their high density, they are excellent acoustic insulators. In addition, they are the most durable version of sandwich panels.

Polystyrene sandwich panels

Oborniki boards with polystyrene core provide thermal insulation of objects. They can be used for roofs, walls, facades, partitions or partitions in industrial and agricultural construction. Panels with a polystyrene core, also known as polystyrene sandwich panels, can be used only in light colors, to minimize the risk of delamination under the influence of solar radiation and wherever it is required light cladding of the hall.

Polyurethane sandwich panels

PIR board and PUR board are polyurethane boards with similar properties.

The chemical composition of polyurethanes (PUR foam – polyurethane, PIR foam – polyisocyanurate) used as the core of the panels is characterized by high thermal insulation. Polyurethane boards are great thermal insulators and have basic fire resistance.

PIR vs. PUR - what is the difference between PUR panels and PIR boards?

PIR panels and PUR panels have a very similar chemical composition, however PIR board contains much more isocyanate. In practice, the key difference is fire resistance – PIR panels show better fire resistance properties compared to PUR boards. In the event of a fire, PIR panels maintain their structural properties longer. Both types of polyurethane panels have very good thermal insulation properties and are the most energy-efficient solution for the construction of steel halls. Despite their lightness, they are very resistant to mechanical damage.

PIR panels (sandwich panels, polyisocyanurate panels)

Because of their improved fire resistance, PIR panels, also known as polyisocyanurate, are some of the best insulation materials available on the construction market. They are used as HalMod steel structure cladding, providing excellent thermal insulation properties. Ideal for those who value energy efficiency and security.

PIR board - properties

  • Excellent thermal insulation properties – saves on energy costs and provides thermal comfort inside the hall
  • They have a slightly better fire resistance, but in most cases, in addition to the basic protection of up to 30 min of some elements, mineral wool filled panels are always used – PIR panels are flame retardant, which contributes to the safety of your building.
  • Lightweight – PIR panels are lightweight, which makes them easier to install and reduces the load on the structure.
  • Aesthetics – A hall made of PIR panels looks very modern and aesthetically pleasing, in the case of using panels with a hidden fastening system, you can achieve the effect of an elegant, smooth facade.

For different indoor temperatures, we recommend different thicknesses of PIR panels:

Required temperature in a steel hall Recommended type of sandwich panel
min. 16 °C

PIR panels:

  • 140 mm (roofing sheet)
  • 120 mm (wall plates)
  • With insulation:

    – U 0.15 W/m2 x K (roofing sheet)

    – U 0.20 W/m2 x K (wall plates)
8-16 °C

PIR panels:

  • 80 mm (sandwich sheet for roof)
  • 60 mm (wall plates)
  • With insulation:
    • U 0.3 W/m2 x K (sandwich sheet for roof)
    • U 0.4 W/m2 x K (boards per wall)
No temperature requirements
  • Multilayer board min. 40 mm
  • trapezoidal sheeta (link to description of trapezoidal sheets)

Your hall doesn’t require insulation? Check also: Trapezoidal sheet for steel hall cladding. (link to article on trapezoidal sheets) – is an economical solution for steel halls for storage, where specific temperatures are not required.

Mineral wool sandwich panels

Unlike polystyrene corkboard or polyurethane board, wool sandwich panel is non-flammable. The mineral wool core is completely non-flammable (rock wool), so that the oborniki boards with such a core can be used in the construction of buildings with increased fire requirements, and even as fire barriers – it does not spread flame and no smoke is emitted. It is worth noting that hard mineral wool is harmless to the environment. Steel halls made of sandwich panels with a mineral wool core are energy-efficient and have excellent fire resistance.

Mineral wool boards are characterized by:

  • very good fire resistance
  • very good thermal insulation
  • good sound insulation (sound absorption)

When building a sandwich panel steel hall, the following are applicable:

  • Roof sandwich panels with mineral wool core
  • Wall sandwich panels with mineral wool core

Sandwich panels for steel halls

Sandwich panels (oborniki boards) is the ideal solution for steel halls where people will often be present, such as a workshop or production hall, especially if it is to be a heat hall where workers will spend many hours each day. Such facilities are feasible, but it is worth remembering that careful design is required for facilities where people work. Such hall cladding is also worth choosing when it is important to maintain a specific temperature, such as in food processing halls or refrigerated halls. The sandwich panel hall is an excellent choice for many industries.
